What is a Theme-Based Curriculum?

Theme-based curriculum, students experience an almost unlimited variety of amazing real-life topics, which makes learning much more fun and challenging. Let’s talk about theme-based learning, what it offers, and why it is almost certainly the best method of education for your child.

Theme-based learning is very different from how you learn. Essentially, theme-based learning treats learning very differently from traditional subject-based learning.

Firstly, theme-based learning emphasizes the necessity of applying academic skills. Language Arts, Math, and the Arts are skills that enable us to understand and express thoughts; they can be applied to any theme, regardless of the topic. In a theme-based classroom, activities such as writing, reading, and drawing are not pursued for their own sake. Subject-based learning often treats education as learning for the sake of learning, something acquired primarily for taking tests. True theme-based learning eliminates the concept of 'subjects.' In a school fully embracing this approach, the daily schedule would not mention 'math' or 'science' explicitly, because these skills are integrated into the themes.

첫째, 테마 중심 학습은 학문적 기술의 적용을 필수로 합니다. 언어, 수학, 예능은 생각을 이해하고 표현할 수 있게 해주는 기술입니다. 테마에 관계없이 어떤 테마에도 적용할 수 있습니다. 주제 중심 수업에서는 쓰기, 읽기, 그리기 등의 활동이 그 자체를 위해 추구되지 않습니다. 교과 기반 학습은 일반적으로 교육을 시험을 치르기 위해 습득하기 위한 학습을 배움으로 간주합니다. 진정한 주제 기반 학습은 '교과'라는 개념을 완전히 제거합니다. 이 수준의 테마 기반 학습을 사용하는 학교는 일일 일정에서 '수학'이나 '과학'에 대해 언급하지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 이러한 기술이 테마에 포함되어 있기 때문입니다.

Secondly, in theme-based learning, education should be directly applicable to real-world situations, empowering students to use their knowledge to effect changes in their own lives, their communities, and potentially even on a global scale.

둘째, 주제 기반 학습에서 교육은 실제 상황에 직접 적용 가능해야 하며, 어린이들이 자신의 지식을 사용하여 자신의 삶과 지역 사회, 그리고 잠재적으로 전 세계적으로 변화를 가져올 수 있도록 해야 합니다.

Lastly, theme-based learning views factual knowledge as interconnected and complex. When studying environmental pollution, one must consider not only scientific aspects but also those related to social studies, such as issues impacting people.

마지막으로, 테마 기반 학습은 사실적 지식을 상호 연결되고 복합적인 것으로 봅니다. 환경오염을 연구할 때에는 과학적 측면뿐만 아니라 사람에게 영향을 미치는 문제 등 사회와 관련된 측면도 고려해야 합니다.
