Middle Stage

In the middle years program students are exposed to more complex content in English, math, social studies, science, health, art, music and physical education. Korean Studies continue to be developed in the after school program.  Teachers ensure that student technology skills are developed along with the specific skills in each subject area. Students’ ability to use their iPads independently for communication, research, and production of quality assignments is steadily increased.  English Language Arts provides students with opportunities to study specific genres of literature, such as poetry, short stories, novels and essays. Throughout the English program, speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing, and representing skills are further developed.

A student's self-concept, personal expectations and intrinsic motivation are some of the most important indicators of their success at these grade levels. At SIS Canada Inc. we ensure that student achievements are recognized, while areas for growth are identified and nurtured. It is important to note that at the middle years level, comparisons with other students will not be stressed. Students are learning about their own strengths and are encouraged to focus on them, while recognizing areas that require further support and practice. As students mature, they become more independent learners, able to choose preferred learning options from the project choices offered by the teachers. Students are encouraged to reflect on their personal learning and to make plans to address their strengths and needs.

Often during these years, students experiment with leadership and responsibility. SIS Canada Inc. ensures that students participate in group and extracurricular activities providing opportunities for the development of student leadership. Also students in middle years are encouraged to further understand the connections between actions and consequences. Community learning projects give students in the middle years the opportunity to see the difference they can make as responsible and active members of their community.
